Before the Inspection

  • Locate your septic system records (as-built drawing, permit, maintenance logs)
  • Identify tank access lids — mark them for the inspector
  • Clear any obstructions over the tank and drain field
  • Stop using water 1–2 hours before the appointment for accurate readings
  • Have your last pumping date available

Tank Inspection

  • Check inlet and outlet baffles for damage or deterioration
  • Measure scum and sludge layers with a sludge judge
  • Inspect tank walls for cracks, root intrusion, or water infiltration
  • Verify tank capacity matches system records
  • Check for signs of backup or surfacing effluent

Drain Field Evaluation

  • Walk the drain field for wet spots, odors, or lush vegetation
  • Check distribution box for equal flow to all trenches
  • Inspect cleanouts and observation ports

  • Verify setback distances from wells and water bodies

Components & Mechanical

  • Test pumps, floats, and alarms (if pump system)
  • Inspect effluent filters and clean if needed
  • Check electrical connections to pump panel
  • Verify vent pipes are clear

After the Inspection

  • Receive a written report with photos and findings
  • Ask about recommended pumping interval for your usage
  • Discuss any repairs or upgrades needed
